How do I find a profitable niche to build an AI product around?

Find a niche by hunting for a painful, repetitive problem in a market that already pays to solve it. Mine Reddit, niche forums, G2/Capterra reviews, and search trends for recurring complaints, then score candidates on market size, competition, willingness to pay, and how feasible an AI solution is. The best niches are often 'boring' industries with low AI adoption and real budgets, not crowded consumer spaces everyone is chasing.

Use a repeatable discovery process. Search Reddit and industry communities for phrases like 'I hate doing,' 'is there a tool for,' or 'how do you handle' within a target industry. Read negative reviews of existing tools on G2 and Capterra to find unmet needs. Check search trends and 'people also ask' to gauge demand. You're looking for the same pain mentioned repeatedly by people who clearly spend money to deal with it.

Score each niche on four factors: market size (enough buyers), competition (gaps the incumbents ignore), willingness to pay (existing budgets, not just interest), and technical feasibility (can today's models actually do it reliably). A great-sounding niche with no willingness to pay is a hobby; a smaller niche with clear budgets and a real workflow problem is a business. Favor narrow over broad, you want to be the obvious choice for a specific group.

Reverse-engineer where money is already moving. Look at recent AI startups (YC batches, Product Hunt, AI directories) to see which problems are getting funded and which adjacent niches are underserved. Honest tradeoffs: hot consumer niches are crowded and hard to monetize, while boring B2B niches (compliance, logistics, trades, professional services) often have higher willingness to pay and less competition. Pick where you also have some unfair advantage, expertise, audience, or network.
