How do I choose a profitable niche for my business?

Choose the niche by who pays and how much, not by what interests you. A profitable niche has an identifiable buyer with a budget, an urgent problem, and a way to reach them repeatably. Start from the who-pays-and-how-much lens: name the exact customer, the pain, and what solving it is worth to them. Then score two or three candidate niches on the Idea Validation Scorecard so "profitable" is measured on real willingness to pay, not enthusiasm.

A niche is not a topic, it is a buyer. "Fitness" is a topic; "strength coaching for postpartum runners" is a niche because it names a specific person with a specific problem and, crucially, a reason to spend money now. Profitability lives in that specificity: the tighter the buyer, the easier it is to speak to them, reach them, and charge a real price.

Apply the who-pays lens from the idea-generation-techniques guide. For each candidate niche, write three lines: who exactly is the customer, what expensive or painful problem do they have, and what is solving it worth to them per month or per project. Niches where you can answer all three crisply are the profitable ones. In our Idea Bank, the highest-opportunity ideas almost all name a budget-holding buyer (restaurant owners, boutique-hotel GMs, 20-to-500-employee HR leaders, self-managing landlords) rather than a vague audience.

Prefer niches with recurring pain over one-off pain, because recurring pain funds recurring revenue, and 161 of our 220 vetted ideas earn recurring revenue for exactly this reason. A problem the buyer faces every month is worth far more than a problem they face once.

Then quantify. Score your top niches on the Idea Validation Scorecard, paying closest attention to the monetization axis, and pick the one where willingness to pay is demonstrable, not assumed. Validate the price with a handful of real conversations before you build anything.

Take the broad space [topic] and give me 5 tightly-defined niches, each with the exact buyer, their recurring pain, and what solving it is worth per month.

Score these niches [list] on demand, competition, and monetization 0-100, and tell me which has the clearest willingness to pay.

For [niche], where do these buyers already gather and how would I reach 20 of them this month to test the price?
