Should I build a business around a current trend or stick to something evergreen?

Build on an evergreen foundation and ride the trend as a tailwind, not the whole business. Serve a durable, ongoing need (people always want to save time, look credible, stay compliant) and use the current trend as the timely reason to buy now and the wedge to get attention. That way you get the growth of a trend without the fragility of a fad: if the trend fades, the underlying need, and your customers, remain. Check an idea's why-now to tell a durable shift from a short fad.

The trap is treating trend and evergreen as opposites. The strongest businesses layer them: a permanent human or business need underneath, and a current shift on top that makes solving it urgent and gives you an angle. AI-assisted services are the clearest example, the need (get work done affordably) is evergreen, and AI is the trend that lets a small team serve many clients and gives customers a reason to move now.

Distinguish a durable shift from a fad using the why-now lens. Ask what is actually driving the trend: a permanent change in technology, regulation, or behavior, or a burst of hype with no lasting mechanism. Remote and multi-state hiring, AI in workflows, and EV adoption are structural shifts with staying power; a single viral product or platform gimmick usually is not. Our Idea Bank entries carry explicit why-now notes for exactly this reason, so you can see whether the timing rests on a durable driver.

Build the business so it survives the trend. Own the customer relationship and the underlying outcome, not a specific tool or platform that could vanish. If your entire business is arbitrage on one fleeting fad or one platform's current algorithm, you have built on sand; if the fad is just your entry point into serving a lasting need, you have built on rock with a rocket strapped on.

Test the timing before you commit. Score the idea on the Idea Validation Scorecard and read the why-now critically: strong idea plus durable driver is a green light; strong idea plus "because it is hot right now" and nothing underneath is a warning.
